About 99% of the calcium (Ca) in the body is found in the bones and the teeth, with calcium making up about 35% of the horses’ bone.
Calcium also plays important roles in the body such as muscle contraction, the function of cell membranes, blood formation and clotting, lactation and the regulation of many cell enzymes.
The skeleton, other than being a structural support for the body, serves as a readily available storage location for calcium.
Calcium deficiency can lead to bone disorders, poor muscle function, impaired blood clotting and inadequate nervous transmission.
