The Final Countdown

shiny showing pony

One week to go. The final countdown is here!

The ponies have been working well and we are happy with their progress. Final decisions have been made and we have clipped one of the boys going but all the others are staying as they are, which is what I personally prefer for native ponies. Final preparations are well under way and the farrier and physio have been to ensure they are in as good as shape as possible. Some of them have been to a show or HOYS Practise which went well. So fingers crossed we have prepared them as best as possible.

I have been lucky to receive some deliveries for the show – a great supply direct from Balanced Horse Feeds means I am well stocked up with Show Mix for the week ahead, as well as a good supply of chocolate bars by the box load for me!

I competed at the British Dressage Nationals last Friday which was great fun, its such a wonderful opportunity to ride alongside professional dressage riders on their top horses. Very inspirational! Quite a contrast from them on their very big powerful horses doing piaffe to me on my little Welsh Section B, but we held our own and came away with a very credible 8th place.

At the moment my desk is filled with paperwork, lists and timetables. Any jobs that we can do we have but most have to be left to closer to the day such as trimming, washing, cleaning tack, packing the lorry. Its all very exciting.

For those going, a few little tips…

Wear comfortable footwear! There is a lot of walking and if you’ve not got comfortable footwear you maybe a bit foot sore in no time at all!

Pack warm clothes. It is cold at night sleeping in the lorry and the early morning are fresh.

Remember the wash bucket. Don’t forget to pack an extra bucket for all your washing stuff, you don’t want to be putting soapy water in a bucket and then be expecting your pony to drink from it.

Your pony/horse must wear their bridle numbers at all times when they are out of the stables. You wont be allowed into exercise arenas without them.
I’m really looking forward to the show, to think that this time next week I will be there with my ponies and ready to compete. For me, this is a really exciting time, a chance to go through into that ring, it gives me goosebumps with pride. Some of my ponies hadn’t even been to a show this time last year and for one of them they were only broken into ride over the winter! They’ve all improved and got better as the year has gone on; and progress is always so satisfying and pleasing to achieve.

For some their dreams will come true, but others will be left thinking what if or if only ….. just remember what your dream was on a cold, wet miserable rainy January day. If it was to qualify and compete at HOYS, make sure you reflect and realise how far you and your partnership have come. Your taking home the best pony/horse and he really doesn’t care if he is placed or not, he just wants a polo and to get muddy in the field again!

Don’t forget to come along to the live zone on Wednesday as it would be great to see some smiley faces in the audience.
I would just like to wish everyone competing the best best of luck, remember to enjoy your time at the show, its a fantastic achievement to have qualified. Smile and enjoy yourself.

Two weeks to go!

Two weeks to go!!

And the the countdown is on! The past week has flown by and we really are heading for HOYS soon. I think we would say this week has has been full of organisation.

Starting with lists! I actually love a list so I am very excited to start to write lists of everything. What I need to pack, what I need to pack in the lorry, list of jobs to do, timetables of work programs for the ponies.
Over the past week we’ve been busy washing. Endless amounts of washing! Although all the rugs and show gear gets washed after every show, at HOYS we need extra rugs, for if they sweat after evening exercise, extra bandages as white legs very easily become grubby, extra hoods, for in case they get damp in the rain, extra numnah’s as they will need clean ones for their class. The list goes on!

Dry cleaning for my Jackets as they’ve collected, polo, grass and general saliva throughout the year. They’re in need of a clean so they look respectable once again!

The lorry has had a spring clean – as I am sure you can imagine as the season has gone on we have collected endless amounts of ‘extra stuff’! This includes the likes of half a packet of baby wipes, empty chocolate wrappers, old back numbers, various qualification cards, old schedules, odd socks. You name it, my lorry probably has it. It is like a walking tack shop, DIY Store and charity shop of various clothing items!

I have also had to get all my tack organised – running repairs and alterations to my local saddler for adjustments and then we re-check all the tack fits, girths and everything else is ready, so that the tack can be cleaned next weekend ready for the big day.

Feed orders have been done so both equine and humans have supplies of their favourite feed and treats! Plenty of Balanced Horse Feeds will be delivered next week for the ponies, in time to be packed. As well as large amount of polo’s and chocolate for me!

The ponies have all worked well over the past weeks and have seen the physio to make sure they’re in peak condition. The coats are ok, just about holding for now, but its a yo yo situation of rugs on/rugs off. Some of them are off to a show on Saturday and others have an outing planned next week.

At HOYS on Wednesday I have been asked to talk at the ‘Live Zone’ HOYS are holding called ‘Lets talk showing’. This is a talk with professional show riders where we give a talk about showing ponies and tips with a Q & A session at the end. It is being held at the Live Zone in the shopping village at 1pm for 45 mins. I like to ride ponies more than talking into a microphone but I am sure it will be fun, but please come along I might need some support!

The road to HOYS with Sam Roberts

behind the ears
Hi Everyone,

My name is Sam Roberts and I am a rider and producer of horses – in particular I specialise in native ponies. I feed my yard on a range of Balanced Horse Feeds, which I have done for quite a few years and genuinely believe their food is brilliant.

I am very excited to have six ponies competing at the Horse of the Year Show at the beginning of October at the NEC.

I have a New Forest , Welsh A, B, C and 2 Dartmoor ponies all competing in the Mountain & Moorland classes .

Over the next few weeks I am going to be sharing with you my diary of what I am up to each week in the run up to HOYS. This will cover all the work involved, from grooming and riding, to practice outings and fitness. Everything I will be doing to ensure each pony (and myself) are prepared for this big occasion.

3 weeks to go !

Wow, in the blink of an eye the season has flown past. We are so lucky to have qualified six ponies for HOYS, with several other ponies who very narrowly missed out on qualifying , although I am sure they dont mind having a nice holiday and getting hairy!

All the entries have been done and finalised. Little details like checking the  vaccination certificates are correct, JMB Measuring has also all been done, as well as working out the logistics of getting ponies there, making sure we have the correct amount of tickets, stables, etc. Over the next few weeks we’ve got a lot to cram in!

We have British Dressage National Championships with another pony, a couple of shows and pre HOYS practise as four of our team are first timers to the show. We like to give them the opportunity to experience indoor schools and some atmosphere as some of them may have only been indoors once or twice in their life and certainly not since March/April!

Then there is the clipping dilemma to think about. We are desperately trying to convince them the summer is still here and they do not want to grow any coat! Easier said than done with native ponies, they’re not silly and know the daylight hours are shortening.

The Farrier has been organised so they will have new shoes/ feet trimmed with enough time just incase of any emergencies. As well as working out an individual work plan so that they arrive for the day fresh, fit and ready. I like to do this as all my ponies are different and some will need more fitness work; to tone them up. Others need a bit more schooling, others can hack lots to keep them happy and interested. All my ponies get turned out daily as I believe they really enjoy being mud monsters and living a natural life. I am not such a fan of brushing all that mud and dust off them daily though, as I end up with more dust, hair and mud on me!

Look forward to keeping you posted with my diary next week.

Some are in need of some mane care!

Team Smeeth – BSHA Success

winning showing

I think we have just about recovered after mounds of washing and unpacking!

The week started with the BSHA Hunter Championships. Penny Clarke’s Novice LWT Hunter, Caledonia kicked off the day. He gave Penny a great ride and seems to really enjoy his appearances in the show ring. He has also started his side saddle career now too and competed in the Ladies Show Horse Final to win his class and have the opportunity to dress up for the evening performance. Well done Blue and Penny!

Next up was Ameli Bevan’s Small Hunter, Sydney III. He too enjoyed his spin in the indoor end won a huge Small Hunter Class! He then had a change of clothing and made a show stopping appearance in the Classical Ladies Class, huge well done to Amelia for winning this class as this is all judged on the rider and turnout!

From here we started the HOYS qualifiers with Amanda Gallagher’s, Maximus Meridius in the LWT’s and Mr and Mrs Burleys MWT, It’s The Kings Speech. No pressure in these classes as both had already qualified so a great run out for them both and of course a good opportunity to get their party clothes out for the evening performance.

Friday saw the beginning of the National Championships so the turn of the Cobs and Riding Horses. First up was Mr L Turleys, Chantilly Sandman! What a super day he had, started by winning the Classic Supreme LWT Cob and then standing Cob Champion and going on to be joint Supreme with Ollie Hood and Diamonds Are Forever, what a ride off that was! Super well done Team Hood and well deserved.

Next up was Nina and Neil’s HWT Cob, Tristar he too put his best foot forward and had his chance to shine in the evening performance. He stood 3rd in another huge Classic Supreme HWT Cob.

Mr and Mrs Burleys Novice LWT Cob, Shanbally Oliver just gets better and better. For such a young Cob he has an old head on his shoulders! He was 3rd in the Novice LWT Cob Class after qualifying for Hoys at Moreton!

Nina Armstrong-Finlay’s, Miramax AKA Champion The Wonder Cob! Had a great show too he just loves strutting his stuff under those lights! He really is Mr Reliable and Nina enjoyed her child free horsey holiday.

Champagne Fever, Owned by Mr P Lobb also had a great show and performed to finish 3rd overall in the Hoys Small RH Class.

Mrs S Moss’ Tiger Oats as usual performed beautifully in his classes too. He really is the Rolls Royce of Riding Horses.

Finally Hayley Gill also competed her own Cobby Dazzler to have some great results accross the board. Well done Hayley and Barney.

As you can imagine it was a very busy show for us with 12 horses competing over the few days, lots of unpacking and repacking to do before HOYS.

Well done to everyone else competing too and great to see you all.

As always a huge thank you to our team at the show and at home too!

As ever a massive thank you to all of our sponsors too.
